Question by Johnpea: how can I install & work on a new wordpress site without taking my existing pages offline?
I have a site that generates income every day but I want to replace the existing HTML pages with a wordpress blog. It will take several days to add all the content etc. I want to add all the content then switch over from old to new. How can I do all his without my existing site being affected?

Best answer:

Answer by Chris Spectre
I haven’t looked at the install procedure for wordpress, but it should be ok if you go into filemanager, create new folder, name it anything, maybe ‘test’. Upload wordpress to the ‘test’ folder, create a database for it then follow the wordpress install procedure. You can then get to the wordpress folder by simply typing your url and adding /test to the end. Once you’ve transferred all your content from one site to the other, you will need to ‘swap’. Your database settings will need to be changed, probably from within config.php these will mainly refer to the url and path to directory. If you’re still unsure, just edit and i’ll look a bit deeper into the wordpress install procedure for you.

Thank JK for the addendum, haven’t used wordpress so wasn’t so sure about the final touches. However i would add that it’s not necessary to downlod the files.
After it’s all set up and updated ready to go, go into the directory of your old site which is probably public_html. Use the select all function then un-tick the folder that holds the new site, in my example ‘test’. Select the delete button to get rid of all the old files, leaving only the new wordpress folder.
Now, just in case there’s a hiccup, open the wordpress folder, use select all, then use the ‘copy’ button. Copy them all out of the new folder, so if the folder name is ‘test’ (public_html/test) delete the word ‘test’ from the url offered to you. Now your site will be in the public_html folder AND still in the original folder. So if anything goes wrong you’ve still got the site in ‘test’. Once you’ve set the correct url’s and you’re happy that it’s all functioning you can then delete the ‘test’ folder.

Answer by Anthony is intoDesign
Depending on who your webhost is, you will need to run Fantastico through the CPanel. You can then proceed and install WordPress via Fantastico. Good luck.

Question by : can I install wordpress on a windows based server?
Is it easy or do I need to manually install php and mysql? normally these types of things are already present on a linux based cpanel system. Just wondered if this going to be complicated… Its been years since I used to set up these things, I remember it was a complicated process. Are there any easy automatic installers now for php and mysql? Thanks.
Thanks so far guys. It will be using IIS

Best answer:

Answer by Fraggle
Take a look at xampp – http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

There are probably WordPress bundles that include all of this. Are you thinking of using Apache or IIS as the web server?

Best answer:

Answer by WordPress Training
There are heaps of form handling plugins available for WordPress and many of these make it very simple to add Captcha Capabilities. My own personal favourite is “Contact Form 7″ which does have a Captcha capability and plenty of other features.

Question by Ordinary Eyes: Should I install WordPress to a subdirectory?
I’m helping a friend with a WordPress blog site. They have hosting space and their own domain name. I can either install the program to the default www.example.com or www.example.com/blog. I have been told that it is better to install to example.com/blog for security reasons, and then have anyone visit example.com redirected to example.com/blog. Are there any disadvantages in doing this?

Best answer:

Answer by Andy G
Having set up load of blogs, shops, forums etc I can tell you there is no advantage to setting it up in the root folder but there are disadvantages. Imagine some time in the future you want to add something to your domain, where would it go? It would surely break form if you stuck it in /shop.
Also by sticking it in /blog you’re telling people and search engines what it is, adding a bit of information that wasn’t there before – always a winner. It’s also a great security deterrent, although /blog is slightly unimaginative to deter most malicious scrapers. It’s a good idea to remove the version number to any installed script as this is what people look for before attacking your site.

Best answer:

Answer by A A
I do not think you can do this. You would require a VNC connection from Godaddy, and shell access, and even if you did you would need the Linux version for it, otherwise acces to Wine from the server.

Question by Glynn S: How Do I Install A WordPress Plugin?
I’m trying to build a website using wordpress and want to install some plugins that have been recommended to me. The problem is all the tutorials I have been able to find (mainly using you tube) refer me to a section on the wordpress control panel called plugins (sounds simple and logical) the problem is I’ve been searching for three days and cannot find the word plugins on my control panel.
Have there been recent changes?
Can anybody tell me what to do?
Can anybody refer me to up-to-date tutorials?

Best answer:

Answer by Wa
First, login to you admin http://yourhost.com/wp-admin/
You’ll go to Dashboard page.
At left menu, click Plugins, you’ll go to plugins page.
At left menu, click Add Plugins. In that page you can search every plugins avalaible at WordPress.org.
